Michael Owen has said that Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City and Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool are all capable of winning the UEFA Champions League trophy this season.

Owen played as a striker for Liverpool, Real Madrid, Newcastle United, Manchester United and Stoke City, as well as for the England national team.

Owen believes the two Premier League giants have great chances of winning the Europe top-flight league trophy this campaign.

According to the 39-year-old, both Man City and Liverpool are slightly ahead of everyone other teams at the moment in the competition.

Manchester City qualified for the Champions League quarter-final stage on Tuesday after defeating Schalke 04 7-0 on Tuesday, while Liverpool defeated Bayern Munich 3-1 on Wednesday night.

Other teams that have qualified for the last eight are: Juventus, Manchester United, Ajax, FC Porto, Tottenham Hotspur, and Barcelona.

“I said at the start. I thought it was an English year,” Owen told BT Sport.

“Liverpool and Manchester City are the favourites to win the Champions League this season.

“They’re slightly ahead of everyone else at the moment.”
