The suspect attempted to restart the relationship with the minor, but she rebuffed his advances, angering the suspect.
A 27-year-old Kenyan man was charged with committing serious harm to his ex-girlfriend after she rejected him.
Joel Okongo, the culprit, is accused of severing the high school student’s left hand on April 22, 2022 in Nairobi’s Silanga neighborhood.
Okongo is also accused of threatening to kill the victim’s sibling by threatening to slice off his head.
Okongo and the minor had previously been together, but they split up because she wanted to continue her schooling.
During the school vacations, the suspect attempted to restart the relationship with the minor, but she rebuffed his advances, angering the suspect, who began issuing threats to her, warning her of unspecified consequences.
The minor was returning to her parents’ house after visiting a relative on the fateful day when she was stopped by the Okongo, who allegedly pointed a panga at her neck, but she defended herself with her left hand, which was severed. The hand was severed in two.
Okongo then ran away into the slums, leaving the minor bleeding heavily. She was taken to a hospital and then transferred to Kenyatta National Hospital.
Before Kibera law senior principal magistrate Esther Bhoke, Okongo disputed the charges.
He was released on a Sh200, 000 surety bond and a Sh60, 000 cash bail alternative.
The case will be discussed on June 21, 2022, before the hearing on August 18, 2022.
