“I am eager to get started in realizing the club’s enormous potential” – Zidane to coach PSG

"I am eager to get started in realizing the club's enormous potential" - Zidane to coach PSG

French media claimed on Friday that Zinedine Zidane is close to agreeing to replace Mauricio Pochettino as coach of French champions Paris Saint-Germain.

According to Europe 1, the club and Zidane, 49, have reached an agreement in principle for the former Real Madrid manager to join ahead of the new season.

Sources at the Parc des Princes, according to RMC Sport, have declined to deny the reports.

A PSG insider later told AFP that such a deal would have to be approached with prudence.

Pochettino has one year left on his contract after leading the Qatar-backed club to the Ligue 1 title last season, but they were eliminated from the Champions League knockout rounds.

The club’s administration has made it clear that they want to win the competition, with Zidane having led the Spanish giants to the trophy three times in a succession.

The 1998 World Cup winner with France also won La Liga and the Copa del Rey twice at Madrid.

Zidane was in Paris at the same time as Qatar’s Emir for Real’s victory in the Champions League final at the Stade de France last month.

PSG had previously announced the arrival of Luis Campos as their new football advisor, replacing Leonardo.

On the Mediterranean coast, the 57-year-old Portuguese partnered with Kylian Mbappe to help Monaco win the French title in 2017 and Lille four years later.

Player signings will be one of Campos’ responsibilities, with RMC Sport stating that free agent Paul Pogba is waiting for Zidane’s official arrival at PSG before starting talks about joining the team.

“I am ecstatic to be joining Paris Saint-Germain, which I believe is the most ambitious and exciting club in the world,” Campos said in a statement released by PSG.

“I am a firm believer in and supporter of the club’s vision, and I am eager to get started in realizing the club’s enormous potential.”

The 2017 French top-flight season begins on August 6, five days after PSG takes on Nantes in Israel in the French Trophée des Champions.
