Jinai Sunday, a suspected member of a cult, accidentally shot himself in the arm in Ogun State while attempting to load and remove a live round from a locally produced pistol.
The “pistol accidentally exploded, causing serious injuries to his left arm,” according to the Amotekun Corps in the state.
According to CP David Akinremi (rtd), commander of the Ogun Amotekun Corps, Sunday and other conspirators, who are “members of the Aiye Cult group,” were meeting as usual in a bush near Kakanfo village in Obada-Owode, Imeko-Afon Local Government Area of Ogun State, when the crime occurred.
Akinremi claims that after hearing a gunshot, the Amotekun Coordinator in Imeko-Afon instantly sprang into action and detained the injured suspect as well as one Adejare Kehinde based on reliable information.
The head of Amotekun said that the aforementioned Adejare Kehinde was later identified during questioning as “an agent who purchased locally made firearms for the gang from Republic of Benin.”
“A member of the gang named Ogundele Elijah, (alias Ogun 07) who confessed to being an ex-convict, having been served six months sentence in Ilaro Correctional Centre for cultism, was later arrested based on earlier confession by the first two suspects.
“Operatives of the Corps are, however, on the trail of other members of the gang still at large,”
