Arsenal defender Shkodran Mustafi has expressed his frustration at Mesut Ozil’s Arsenal departure as the German midfielder closes in on a permanent transfer to Turkish side Fenerbahce.
Ozil, whose contract was due to expire this summer, last featured for the north London side in a 1-0 victory over West Ham United in March 2020 before finding himself excluded from matchday squads and deemed surplus to requirements.
Mikel Arteta’s decision to remove Ozil from his plans has divided opinion among supporters, with this saga now set to reach its conclusion.
The 32-year-old shared images on social media of his arrival in Istanbul on Sunday evening, all but confirming the move taking place.
Reacting to this transfer, Mustafi praised the efforts of Ozil during his Arsenal stay while criticising the Gunners’ handling of their former talismanic figure.
“Bro, you have been the most unselfish player on and off the pitch, I have ever shared the dressing room with. You will be always remembered as the #AssistKing,” the Arsenal defender wrote on Twitter.
“Unfortunately, we as a team haven’t been able to assist you when you needed us the most. All the best.”
The German duo won the World Cup together during the 2014 tournament in Brazil and have been club teammates since Mustafi arrived at the Emirates in 2016 following a £35millon move from Valencia.
It’s anticipated that Mustafi will also depart the club this month before the transfer deadline, with the defender also falling out of favour under Arteta.
