Gunmen 'overpower' policemen in Nnewi Area Command, weapons carted away

Unknown gunmen invaded the Nnewi Police Area Command, in Anambra state on Monday afternoon and engaged the policemen in a gun duel.

Witnesses said the gunmen overpowered the policemen in a shootout and carried away some arms.

The station is located on the Okigwe Road area of Umudim, Nnewi.

However, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) said the policemen repelled the attackers.

Ikenga said police and other security agencies are now at the beleaguered station to secure it.

But, a resident of the area who preferred anonymity told NAN that they heard heavy gunshots around the area command at about on Monday.

“We gathered that the shooting was between unidentified gunmen and police at Nnewi Police Area Command and that caused pandemonium amongst the residents of Nnewi community,” he said.

The source added that the gunmen came in about seven vehicles to the police station and started shooting which lasted for over one hour.

He claimed that the gunmen overpowered the police and carted away arms at the station.

He said by the time reinforcement from the combined team of military arrived, the attackers had left.
