Dortmund star Jadon Sancho was left shocked after Manchester United asked the winger to take a pay cut during negotiations over a move to Old Trafford.
The 20-year-old is keen on joining the Red Devils but his hopes have hit a stumbling block as United failed to meet Dortmund’s £108m asking price before the August 10th deadline that they set for the Old Trafford giants.
Dortmund have since ‘confirmed’ that Sancho will stay at the club this summer, though United insist that the deadline was merely a plot to extract a bigger fee for the winger.
United are unwilling to meet Dortmund’s £108m asking price but personal terms with Sancho were considered a formality given his desire to join the club.
However, the Daily Mail claim that United’s first offer to Sancho’s camp required the winger to take a pay cut on his £180,000-a-week wages.
The second offer was not much better and simply matched the salary that he already earns in Germany. Though United have now made progress in talks with Sancho, their approach will surely worry supporters who had hopes to see a deal completed for the winger by now.
Dortmund have launched a charm offensive in recent days with a number of players talking up Sancho’s future at the club.
The Bundesliga giants played their first match of pre-season today in a 6-0 win against Altach, where Sancho played 45 minutes in an impressive displayed.
The winger had been silent on the rumours of a move to United but he spoke out for the first time afterwards by talking up the ‘special players’ coming through at the club.
‘I love playing with this lot,’ said Sancho. ‘It is a special bunch. We’ve got some special young players coming up.
‘I am really happy to share the pitch with them and guide them. I was once in their shoes, playing with the seniors. I am happy for them’.
