Pep reacts after Aguero’s shocking Panenka penalty miss during Manchester City’s defeat to Chelsea

Coach of Manchester City, Pep Guardiola, has reacted to Sergio Aguero’s shocking penalty miss during his team’s defeat to Chelsea.

With Man City leading 1-0 after Raheem Sterling’s first-half opener, Aguero attempted a Panenka penalty on the stroke of half-time but the chipped effort lacked conviction and was comfortably saved by Blues goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.

Manchester City, who would have clinched the Premier League title had they won the match, were the better team in the first half but Chelsea produced an impressive second-half display and came back to win through Hakim Ziyech and Marcos Alonso.

Chelsea’s victory delayed Man City’s title celebrations and may have given Thomas Tuchel’s side a psychological advantage ahead of the Champions League final at the end of the month.

Asked about Aguero’s penalty, Guardiola said: ‘It’s his decision. The taker makes his decision. He decided to take it his way, I’ve nothing to add.’

Pressed on whether he feels Manchester City would have won the game had the penalty gone in, Guardiola added: ‘We don’t know.

‘We don’t know what would have happened. In one game, many things happen. We cannot deny that 2-0 at half-time would have been different.’

On the 2-1 loss in general, Guardiola said: ‘It was a tight game, but in general we played really good. We miss our chance in last minute of first half with the penalty.

‘They are a top side and we were playing better. We were in a good position but in the end they score.’

Chelsea’s win see them climb above Leicester City into third place, six points above fifth-placed West Ham with three matches remaining.
