Zambia’s President Edgar Lungu has promised to restock the pond where a popular pet fish died after the circumstances of its death have been established.

The carp fish, known as Mafishi, died on Monday and was a resident of the Copperbelt University (CBU) pond for decades.

It has been widely mourned by present and former students, as well as politicians, with the word “Mafishi” even trending on Twitter.

Some students believed the fish brought them good luck in exams.

Zambia’s Higher Education Minister Brian Mushimba tweeted about the president’s promise:

It is however unclear which species will be introduced in the pond.
